The Pacific Seascape is one of the most productive areas in the world, driven by the Humboldt current, which promotes high biodiversity and marine species in abundance. This ecosystem is home to 66 species of sharks, 150 species of seabirds, 5 species of sea turtles, and more than 20 species of cetaceans, becoming crucial for marine life conservation. Additionally, it is vital for the country's economy, as fishing is the second most important economical activity. The anchoveta fishery is one of the largest single-species fisheries in the world. It supports an entire fish processing industry, making Peru the world's leading fish meal producer (FAO, 2016). On the other hand, the main artisanal fisheries in the country are those of giant squid (pota) and mahi-mahi. Peru represents nearly 45% and 49% of global catches, respectively (FAO, 2022). Both artisanal fisheries are fundamental pillars for the livelihood of thousands of artisanal fishers.

Threats:

Despite its wealth, the Pacific Seascape faces serious threats. Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing jeopardizes the resources sustainability. The incidental capture of protected marine species, such as turtles and small cetaceans, is another major challenge, affecting biodiversity.

Furthermore, non-compliance with fishing regulations and the limited participation of communities in decision-making exacerbate this situation. Pollution is also a growing problem, especially due to the abandonment of ghost gear that harms the ecosystem and the sustainability of this activity.

What do we do in the Pacific?

WWF Peru's conservation work in the Pacific Seascape is developed through various interventions:

  • We contribute to the sustainability of fisheries, conserve marine biodiversity, and promote participatory and transparent governance in the fishing sector.

  • We support fishing communities and the private sector in implementing better fishing practices, product traceability, and compliance with international sustainability standards.

  • We provide support for public policies development that promote more effective management of fishery resources.

  • We promote the proper management of solid waste to mitigate the impact of marine pollution, with a focus on circular economy.
